EGI melt processing

EGI technology for processing melt in a ladle at the pre-casting stage

Technology provides

  • Melt degassing and removal of non-metallic inclusions
  • Increasing melt flow and mold fillability
  • Elimination of gas shrinkage defects
  • Achieving a favorable structure in a cast metal, affecting its structural levels from atomic to macro
  • Positive impact on cast metal properties

The essence of technology

Pressure pulses of a wide frequency spectrum (0.1–100,000 Hz) from an electrically charged pulse generator are fed into the ladle with the melt through a special waveguide. This significantly accelerates heat and mass transfer, physicochemical processes at the macro and micro levels, changes the structure and properties of the liquid metal, creating favorable conditions for its effective crystallization.

Advantages of technology

  • Ecological cleanliness combined with successful processing
  • Extremely low specific electricity consumption compared to other ladle processing methods: < 2 kWh/t
  • Short processing time: < 5 minutes
  • Easy maintenance and high reliability of the high-voltage equipment used
  • Possibility of independent use and combination with other ladle processing methods (modification, alloying, blowing, etc.)

Technology efficiency

  • Increasing the fluidity and fillability of forms
  • Reducing the hydrogen content in the melt
  • Reduction of non-metallic inclusions
  • Reduced susceptibility to cold brittleness
  • Reducing the spread of mechanical properties
  • Increased wear resistance
  • Decrease in magnetic permeability
  • Increased tightness
  • Reducing the harmful effects of iron impurities

Implementation

At shipbuilding and machine-building enterprises of Ukraine and the CIS countries, equipment for ladle processing up to 50 tons is being developed for ladles with a capacity of 350 tons.
